At the request of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind was asked to organize and operate an Eye Bank registry throughout Canada.
The Eye Bank of Canada (Ontario Division), Canada's first eye bank, started as a joint venture to help address the many Canadian soldiers who returned from the war with eye injuries. The Eye Bank was founded by the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and The University of Toronto.
That same year, the Eye Bank received its first pair of donated eyes, retrieved by Dr. John Piper, from Stratford General Hospital. The eyes were accepted and processed by Mrs. Anne Wolf, The Eye Bank's first administrator. Dr. Hugh Ormsby performed two surgeries with the donated corneas and restored the sight of two soldiers blinded by chemical warfare in World War I, helping them see again for the first time in 40 years.
In 2004, the Eye Bank became a member of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), a national association dedicated to the restoration of sight through the promotion of eye banking by regulating medical standards, accrediting eye banks, and certifying technicians.
In 2007, the Eye Bank became a Health Canada approved facility. Health Canada is a federal agency responsible for helping Canadians with their health needs. They ensures the accessibility of high-quality health services.
In 2011, the Eye Bank expanded their services to include collecting, processing and distributing amnion donations, which is used during eye surgery as a bandage to help damaged eye tissue heal.
In 2015, the Eye Bank joined Kensington Health in July to continue their mission of collecting, processing and distributing donated human eyes and tissue for sight-saving transplants.
