Care services

The Kensington Hospice care team

Hospice care is all about meeting your needs and supporting your family. Our care team will focus on your quality of life and managing symptoms so you are comfortable at all times. We’ll work with you and your family to create a care plan that meets your needs and wishes while you are at the hospice.

Medical care

You will have access to specially trained and experienced nursing staff, physicians and volunteer care providers 24 hours a day. The hospice provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary for providing comfort.

Nursing care

Specially trained and experienced nurses are on duty 24 hours a day. They will develop a care plan with you and focus on your individual needs, as well as the needs of your family. Hospice also provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary for comfort.

Personal support

Personal Support Workers (PSW) provide compassionate and dignified personal care and help you and your family with the activities of daily living. They also provide companionship and valuable emotional support.

Social work services

Our Social Worker provides you with practical support (help with financial matters, funeral arrangements) as well as offering emotional support to individuals and families. The Social Worker offers bereavement support to families for up to one year after a family member's end of life, as well as support with spiritual questions and concerns. Families can work directly with the Social Worker at the hospice, or they can also help to find services within the community.

Music therapy

Music is a powerful tool. It can connect people, create relationships, support the dying process and supplement grief and bereavement work. Music therapy at the hospice has resulted in powerful memories and strong support for those experiencing grief and loss. Our Music Therapist is the founder and coordinator of the first music therapy programs at The Kensington Hospice and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Volunteers

Our hospice volunteers offer companionship and emotional support. You will find our hospice volunteers are always willing to help. All the meals at the hospice are prepared by qualified volunteer chefs and are made to order according to a resident's preferences. We also have volunteers who are trained in complementary therapies including massage, Reiki and aromatherapy.

Virtual care and supports

We use information, communication and virtual care technology as tools to facilitate connection between residents with their family members, friends and caregivers, or with care or service providers. Examples include using telephone and video conferencing technologies for consultations with physicians or care conference meetings. These technologies are also used to enable social connection between residents and the people important to them – especially those who live at a distance and cannot visit in-person regularly.
